Pathways Presents "Fashion Icon"

Filipinos regard education as one of the most important tool in improving their lives. But based on statistics, only 2 out of 10 Filipino students finish with a college degree. It means that only few can gain access to better jobs and stable lives.
These realities prompted Ateneo de Manila University and Ford Foundation to create Pathways to Higher Education. Pathways to Higher Education is a non-government organization that aims to help poor, less fortunate, but deserving students to have a better access to quality higher education. The said organization does not only help its beneficiaries get ito a good college or university but also trains them holistically to ensure that they can acquire quality education. Pathways faithfully obtains its funding by partnering with co-NGOs and soliciting the help of generous donors. Pathways Youth Groups are actively working for its vision in different parts of the country.
Here in Iloilo, groups of Pathways students from the West Visayas State University and West Visayas State College of Science and Technology initiated a project that could aide them in their fund raising schemes. Pathways Dalan (WVCST) and Project SULAT (WVSU) and the Supreme Student Government of WVCST organized “Fashion Icon” a fashion show contest for a cause.
Ten males and ten females from both schools joined the said modeling competition. The males and females showcased the ever elegant and ever sophisticated masterpieces and creation of Mr. Mandy Salcedo, Iloilo’s newest Prince of Fashion. The show was held at WVCST last December 14, 2006.
The stage was covered with shades of red as the models showcased the designer’s elegant Red Collection. Hues of black and white overshadowed the serene center stage as Mandy’s Black and White collection.
A sensational heat flourished inside the hall as the models showcased the designer’s unique and daring masterpiece of Summer Resort Wear. After that, the audience was then amazed by how the Iloilo’s prince of fashion transformed ordinary denims in to an astonishing one with his Denim Collections.
The models lastly, paraded with the designer’s excellent shades of colorful gowns for the ladies and elegant black suites for the males.
The affair lasted for 3 and ½ hours yet the people are still eager to see and to know the winners. The winners were based 80% of judges’ total scores and 20% for their popularity basis.
Male model # 8 won the title as Male Fashion Icon 2006. He is also awarded as Mr. Photogenic, Mr. Popularity, and Best in Red Collection. Model #3 is 1st runner up. He is also adjudged as Best in Black and White Collection and Best in Summer Resort Wear. Male model #6 was judged 2nd Runner-up. Male model #7 though didn’t made it to the top spot, took the Best in Denim Wear and Best in Formal Wear award.
For the ladies, model #1 earned the title Female Fashion Icon 2006. She was awarded as Miss Popularity. 1st Runner-up is model #5. She was awarded as Best in Denim Wear and Best in Formal Wear. The 2nd Runner-up is model #6. She took the Best in red Collection, Best in Black and White Collection and the Best in Summer Resort Wear Collection. Model #10 was awarded as Miss Photogenic.
The judges who carefully scrutinized and picked the winners were: ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.

The sponsors are: Mr. Mandy Salcedo, Mang Inasal, Winner’s Gym, The News Today, Pepsi, Alex Floer Garden, CocoGrill Restaurant, RS Development Center, ABS-CBN TV-10 Iloilo, and J and R Family Studio.

The Proceeds of the said project will go to both Pathways Youth Group’s Sharing the Light Project, a project that aims to improve specific public high school libraries in Iloilo.

Christmas Outreach with the Aetas

It was raining hard that day and the road to our destination was bumpy. Yet it was one of the most exciting days of my life. Not only because it was my first time to join a community outreach outside my birthplace (Zamboanga) but also because the people that we will visit were one of the oldest settlers in the Philippines, the Aetas.

I, my partner Lloyd Diel, the Pathways Youth Groups of Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (Pathways- DALAN) and West Visayas State University (Pathways Project SULAT) journeyed towards Nagpana community in Barotac Viejo where the Aetas live. We brought, boxes of noodles, sacks of rice, sardines, clothes and most of all, the special thing in our hearts: the desire to make others happy.

The Aetas were very much welcoming to us. When we arrived we were greeted by a crowd composed of mostly smiling children. Sir Ricky Quibinco, the moderator of Pathways-DALAN then introduced us to the community. We found it easy to open up a conversation with them for they were very much accustomed to visitors. They showed us the crafts that they have made of which some we decided to buy for a very affordable prize.

After that, it was the time for us to give our donations. As they received their gifts, each of them expressed their gratefulness differently. Some of them said, “Thank you”, some “Merry Christmas”, some “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year” and some just gave us a very big smile. Despite the coldness of that afternoon Barotac Viejo seemed to be such a warm place for us.

And when all was done, we ended the event with a group picture taking. All of us were fulfilled of the day except Mr. Ricky Quibinco who decided to adopt an Aeta boy for a week!

Walking in Pathways

It has been more than 3 months now since we came to the island of Panay to become the new Pathways Program Officers for Education in the Visayas Regions. From then on, we have been monitoring and assisting 10 Pathways Youth Groups (PYGs), namely: the PYGs of three Western Visayas State University campuses (WVSU - Lapaz, Lambunao and Pototan) and Western College of Science and Technology (WVCST) in Iloilo city, University of St. La Salle in Bacolod, Guimaras State College (GSC) in Guimaras, Filamer State College (FSC) in Roxas, University of San Jose Recoletos (USJR) and San Carlos (USC) in Cebu, and Siliman University (SU) in Dumagete.

Serving so far is great and we were able to go to different places and meet different people during our visitations with the PYGs and their clienteles, and during the volunteers’ trainings. But our time here is not without its trials and pains. Before we came to our area we had such a perfect vision of service and we thought that we were already so prepared and equipped to administer the tasks given to us by JVP and Pathways. But the truth is it has been a process of learning and letting go of things and there are also times that we get frustrated and tired.

The thing in being Pathways Program Officer for Education Development is that we seldom see immediate victories. The products of our work are usually expressed indirectly or in the attainment of long term goals. Sometimes, the only rewards we receive comes from seeing the enthusiasm of the youth groups to serve and the signs of hope and gratitude from the people they are helping

You can’t help but be amazed by the effort, creativity and cura personalis each member of these PYGs displays despite their hectic academic schedule. Their projects, no matter how big or simple, do help serve in promoting equality in the access to quality higher education. And even though we are still in the pre-implementation phase of the Sharing the Light project and that most of PYGs are just starting to give their college preparation tutorials, we could already sense the joy in the hearts of their beneficiaries. These things together with the support from our love ones, friends, the JVP and Pathways communities and our faith in God are the ones that continue to inspire us to help create a Society wherein there is equality to access quality higher education right here in the Visayas.

There is more to our work than the final triumph, also important are the hope and joy that we give and the positive changes in ourselves that we acquire along the way.

Sharing the light beneficiaries

My parents are both teachers but I never imagined myself doing the same things they do inside the classroom - dirtying my hands with chalk dust, speaking to a crowd of thirty or more students, and worrying about what my next lesson should be. Not until I was drawn into being a Pathways volunteer.

Now, I realize that teaching is fun and self-enlightening at the same time. It's a two-way process, indeed. I get to share with our students the little knowledge I have and I get to learn more from their own ideas and experiences - things that I never would have considered if it were not for them. We teach them grammar, matter, equations, and principles. In return, they taught us that hapiness is found even in simplest things, that poverty is not a hindrance to success, that education is a top priority - in short, they taught us about life itself, which is more meaningful than any works of art or any anthology of books we could offer. They thank us for helping them; we thank them even more for opening our hearts and minds.

It’s been 3 months now since we got here in Iloilo. Our task is to monitor and help establish the Pathways youth groups in the Visayas. Yes, it is hard getting updates from everyone and sometimes it is frustrating when nobody replies (since they are students and teachers whose concern is not just Pathways). It is challenging to get support from the DepEd and the LGU. With all the technicalities involved – paperwork, updates, calls, texts…it is easy to get immersed and forget all about the people to whom and for whom we are doing all these things. What prevents us from falling into this trap is the habit of looking around.

What is important in looking around is seeing something. Allow us to tell you what we saw and found.

We saw the faces of our volunteers and moderators here in the Visayas.

In West Visayas State University (WVSU) where we are based, they give us the sweetest smiles and the most energetic wave whenever we pass by. During our training sessions last July together with volunteers from Western Visayas College of Science and Technology (WVCST), we give and take as much energy from each other. They are so easy to handle even though they are almost 70! After the 8 sessions that we’ve had, there was no mistaking the bond that we’ve formed. Constant text messages of sweet nothings and hi and hellos flood our cellphones.

In Pototan where we attended their Pathways launch, we saw how eager the volunteers were to start teaching their brothers and sisters in the public high schools. We saw their moderator, Ma’m Dichosa, having that gleam in her eye characteristic of people who have a vision of a brighter future.

In NIPSC, Ajuy, we saw the courageous spirit and determination of Ma’m Jo who is being challenged by circumstances but is still willing to fight to make Pathways work in her school. Also in this university, we saw the faces of scholars who are struggling to finish college but are still willing to help Pathways by being a volunteer.

There are those universities which we cannot visit as often we would like to but looking beyond the geographic barrier, we see their wonderful texts and emails - “Institutionalized na ang Pathways dito sa Filamer!”, “Ate, I was able to meet na with the volunteers and we’re starting to plan our fundraising!”, “Kakatapos lang ng leadership training namin and we’re preparing now for the Ed Summit on October!”. Just reading those messages, their excited faces come into our minds.

The youth groups here have not yet started doing tutorials but we’re slowly getting there. But even without the inspiration of seeing their students, just the IDEA that they could help, that they could do something, lights up their eyes. There is no mistaking the eagerness and the hope that you see in their faces.

What more do we see from these?

Father Ben Nebres often tells us that the opportunity is always there but it is just a matter of being ready to grab the opportunity. Well, we see these youth groups preparing themselves to fully use the opportunity given to them to help public high school students. We see a cause for believing in a bright future, a cause for hope because we see the smiling faces of the youth eager to help and bring change. We see Pathways.

But then again, Pathways is not just a system, not a mere venue for helping kids go to college. Pathways is people. Our task therefore is not just to monitor and establish the youth groups but to build pathways from province to province here in the Visayas, a bridge made from trust (to each other that we will make things work), from hope which is its foundation, from faith that assures us that the bridge is strong enough and is able to sustain itself and from love which gives us the reason to cross the bridge and seal the gap between our divided country and our broken dreams.
